Love is in the air. Shivering, frostbitten love.
Oh yes - Valentine's Day is just two days away, and Mac is gearing up for it with all the trimmings!
In the true Macalester fashion that we all know and love, the school is hosting a dance this evening that promotes different expressions of sexuality and just what a person thinks "sexy" is. In what is too convenient to be coincidence, Sex + Positive week is also on the move and under way. This features various kinds of documentaries, workshops, forums, and events meant to create an avenue for students of every race, gender, etc. to express themselves and voice their thoughts on what love and sexuality is, and how they identify as people within our community and the world.
But the fun starts even sooner! Yesterday, students were able to get together and create valentines for friends and loved ones; gifts not specific to normative heterosexual relationships that have become the postmark for Valentine's Day. Also, over the course of this last week two singing groups - the TRADS and the Sirens - were offering singing telegrams. For a small fee they'll barge in anywhere, anytime today and give that special someone a loving and embarrassing serenade.
As I write this, I'm preparing to head out and track down one of these two singing groups to get some good video footage of their exploits. But, as luck would have it, I'm sick with a cold, as are a number of others around campus. Them's the breaks of dorm life in winter, I guess...
Hoping to get better soon and wishing everyone a happy Valentine's Day!
