Tralentine’s Day

Macalester is full of traditions, especially of the singing male variety. The Macalester Traditions (the Trads), Macalester’s premiere—and only— all-male a cappella group, entertained students throughout the day on February 14 with singing valentines, or as they are more commonly known around campus, “Tralentines.”

Throughout the week before Valentine’s Day songs were bought by lovers, exes, and even professors. Traditional songs were sold for $5 apiece and those delivered by shirtless singers for $10 apiece. Half the funds raised were donated to the Cedar Cultural Center- a non-profit music venue completely run by volunteers.

The song selections ranged from “Tracks of my Tears” and “You’ve really got a Hold on Me” by Smokey Robinson, “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar, and “I Will” by the Beatles. Completely arranged by members of the Trads, the classroom performances were w
ell put together and entertaining. Enjoyed by students, staff, and the performers, Tralentine’s Day 2014 was a great success! - Seth Loeffler-Kemp '17
